FCC Auction and Open Access

Both sides of the open access debate have been making their case in the media, in front of Congress, in letters to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and in the blogosphere this week, in anticipation of the FCC formally releasing its draft rules for the upcoming auction of the 700 MHz spectrum.

Here's a quick, but by no means comprehensive, round-up:

  • For an overview of what's at stake for both sides, check out USA Today and The Wall Street Journal (sub required).
  • Professor Susan Crawford, a proponent of open access, writes about today's hearing before the House Commerce Committee in a post she dubs "The iPhone hearing."
  • This article by News.com's Anne Broache reports on that same House hearing.
  • Google shared its reasons for supporting new auction rules in its blog yesterday, and GigaOm wrote about Frontline Wireless' efforts here.
  • In it's own policy blog, Verizon, which opposes any FCC rules that mandate open access, recommends this Wall Street Journal op/ed by Robert Crandall and Hal Singer (sub required) and this blog post by Scott Cleland.
